Is hair chalk temporary?
Yes! Here at Hair Chalk UK, our hair chalk products tend to last until you wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. If you have applied a lot of hair chalk (to light hair in particular), it may take a couple of washes to fully remove all of the colour.
How do you use hair chalk?
Instructions are included on our hair chalk sets and on all product pages. This is how you use our hair chalk sticks:
- Brush through your hair thoroughly to remove any knots.
- Place an old T-Shirt or an old towel around your neck and shoulders. The Hair Chalk can get a little bit messy so we always recommend protecting your clothes whilst applying Hair Chalk.
- Using water, slightly dampen the parts of your hair that you will be chalking. We recommend spraying water on to the hair for an even coverage.
- Now it’s time to use the Hair Chalk. Take your chosen chalk stick and press firmly against your hair, pull the chalk through your hair in a downwards sweeping motion. By applying the chalk this way, it prevents any knots being created.
- Once you have finished applying your hair chalk, use a little hair spray or go over your hair with straighteners or a curling wand to fully seal in the colour.
- Brush the hair as little as possible until you are ready to remove the colour as this will loosen the chalk particles.
Hair Chalk UK always recommend doing a test patch first as very light, brittle or bleached hair can occasionally stain or take a couple of extra washes to fully remove the colour.
How do you remove hair chalk?
Once you are ready to remove the hair chalk from your hair, apply a generous amount of shampoo to dry hair, massage and leave it to soak for a few minutes. Wash out the shampoo and apply some conditioner, allow the conditioner to stay in your hair for around 5 minutes, this will allow the hair to become rejuvenated. Once rinsed, the colour should be fully removed. Some hair types may take a couple of washes to fully remove all of the colour.
The more you brush your hair when you have applied hair chalk, the more the colours will fade as the particles will loosen.
Do you need to do a test patch when using hair chalk?
We always recommend doing a small test patch when using hair chalk as some hair types may take a couple of extra washes to fully remove the colour. In particular, very light hair or bleached hair may take a couple of washes to fully remove the colour.
Is hair chalk safe to use?
Yes! Our products are all temporary, non-toxic and CE marked. So you can get hair chalking as often as you like.
How do you make hair chalk last in your hair?
We have a couple of tips for when it comes to long-lasting hair chalking. First of all, once you have applied the hair chalk, work the chalked area as little as possible as the particles may loosen, so brush the hair as little as possible. You can seal in the hair chalk with hair spray. You can find lots of tips on our Hair Chalk UK blogs section!
Does hair chalk work on dark hair?
Hair chalk works well on all hair colours, even dark hair! Simply dampen your hair before applying the chalk, this will allow the particles to attach thoroughly. Choose your colours wisely, bright and bold colours show up well on dark hair. Build the chalk up gradually in your hair, the more you apply, the brighter the streaks will be.
Does hair chalk work on dyed or bleached hair?
We always recommend a test patch on bleached hair as it can be prone to staining. But on the majority of dyed or bleached hair, hair chalk works as well as it would on natural hair. You may need to wash your hair a couple of times to fully remove the colour, but you will be able to see if this is the case when you do a test patch.
Where can I buy hair chalk?
We currently only see online (www.hairchalk.co.uk). Please be aware of cheap imitations which may be available elsewhere.
Can I get discount on large orders?
Absolutely! If you require a large amount of hair chalk for parties, festivals or to retail yourself, simply get in touch and we will give you our best price.
Will hair chalk make my hair dry?
First of all any kind of chalk is dry, and this is a small price to pay for temporary hair colour as it doesn’t damage your hair. Once you remove any colour, your hair will go back to how it was previously. We recommend using a conditioning treatment afterwards to get your hair silky smooth! When you apply hair chalk it is important to pull the chalk sticks through the hair in a sweeping motion rather than rubbing the chalk sticks up and down through the hair, as this will just cause knotting, be patient and build the colour up gradually.

How long does hair chalk last for?
One of the many great things about hair chalk is that it lasts, forever! Many other temporary hair colourant products have use by dates and once opened they require to be used immediately. But hair chalk will last as long as you need it for.
How much hair does hair chalk cover?
This all depends on how much hair you are covering and how bright you like the colour to be. On average a chalk stick will last for a couple of applications when you are streaking your hair. When it comes to fully covering your hair, you may require a couple of chalk sticks or compact hair chalks.
